Hot Dog Eating Contest Betting Odds For Today

Nothing screams summer like a busy boardwalk, the sun beating down on your face, and frantically jamming hot dogs down your gullet to win a cool belt and some bragging rights. Let’s talk about the annual Nathan’s Hot Dog Eating Contest and who to bet on this year!

What Is Nathan’s Hot Dog Eating Contest?

Nathan’s Hot Dog Eating Contest is an annual competitive eating competition that takes place every Independence Day in Coney Island at the Nathan’s Famous Corporation’s original restaurant.

Hot Dog Eating Contest Betting Odds

This has been a highly popular and anticipated event over the years, as Coney Island is world-famous in terms of its summer recreational activities.

The origin story of this competition varies depending on the storyteller. One of the more popular tales has been told by former Nathan’s promoter Mortimer Matz. He claimed the first competition was held in July 1916 when he set up a hot dog eating contest among four employees to settle an argument on who was the most patriotic.

Let’s fast-forward several decades to the 1990s and 2000s. During this time, the Nathan’s Contest was dominated by Japanese contestants, most notably Takeru Kobayashi, who achieved six consecutive wins from 2001 to 2006. The world watched Kobayashi’s first win in 2001 as he downed 50 hot dogs and buns, destroying the old record of 25.5.

2011 saw the inauguration of Nathan’s Hot Dog Eating Contest for Women. Previously, men and women had competed against each other with the exception of an all-women Memorial Day competition in 1975. Sonya Thomas became the first winner of this competition, putting away 40 hot dogs and buns in 10 minutes and walking away with a prize of $10,000.

Over the years, awards and prizes for this competition have varied. Nowadays, the winner of the men’s division is awarded the coveted international mustard-yellow belt, while the winner of the women’s division is awarded a bejeweled pink belt. The belts stay in possession of the current champions.

Let’s Take a Look at the Reigning Champions

Joey Chestnut

Joey is an American competitive eater who currently resides in San Jose, California. Standing at 6’1” and weighing 220 pounds, Chestnut has won Nathan’s Hot Dog Eating Contest every year since 2007, with the exception of 2015 where he was defeated by Matt Stonie, a then-23-year-old competitive eater and YouTuber from San Jose, California.

Chestnut’s initial win at the 92nd Annual Nathan’s Hot Dog Eating Contest in 2007 was against six-time defending champion Takeru Kobayashi. Chestnut ate 66 hot dogs and buns in 12 minutes, a new world record.

Joey Chestnut’s accomplishments in the field of competitive eating and the world records he holds could be a separate article that would go on for pages and pages.

As of 2020, Chestnut’s 13 victories at the Nathan’s Hot Dog Eating Contest make him the “winningest” athlete of a single event in modern history. This places him over wins for Bill Russell in the NBA, Henri Richard in the NHL, and Yogi Berra in the MLB.

Miki Sudo

Miki is an American competitive eater who currently resides in Connecticut but was born in New York, New York. She is a seven-time consecutive winner of the Nathan’s Hot Dog Eating Contest from 2014 to 2020.

Hot

In her first win, she unseated Sonya Thomas, who had been the previous winner since the inception of the women’s competition in 2011.

Much like Joey Chestnut, Sudo is the winner of many eating competitions including the U.S. National Buffalo Wing Competition, World Kimchi Competition, and Chicago’s RIBMANIA.

She is ranked 5th in the world with the Major Eating League and holds the women’s world record in eating kimchi, ice cream, and, obviously, hot dogs. Her record is quite impressive and would take considerable time to discuss in detail.

Why Should I Bet on the 2021 Nathan’s Contest?

You might be asking yourself, “Why should I bet on this event?” One of the best reasons I can give, especially in the men’s division, is Joey Chestnut’s record.

He has won 13 near-consecutive Nathan’s competitions since 2007 with exception of his 2015 defeat by Matt Stonie. Chestnut is an almost unstoppable force and the odds for his victory this year remain super high.

Likewise, Miki Sudo has an impressive record in the Nathan’s Contest. She is the seven-time champion from 2014 to 2020. She defeated Sonya Thomas in 2014 who had been the three-time winner of the women’s division since 2011.

These contenders have had long-standing reputations of being fun to watch. This event is not only exciting, but also, there’s an entire list of bets for you to wager on.

What Are the Odds?

Hot dog eating contest video

For betting on the Nathan’s Hot Dog Eating Contest this year, you’ll find Joey Chestnut’s odds to win at (-120), with the over/under being 74.5 hot dogs and buns consumed. Likewise, Miki Sudo’s odds to win the 2021 Nathan’s Hot Dog Eating Contest are at (-120) but in her case, the over/under is at 45.5 hot dogs and buns consumed.

The odds for both competitors are even as far as over/unders. The odds for Chestnut to consume over 74.5 hot dogs are the same for him consuming under 74.5. Likewise, the odds are the same for Sudo consuming over and under 45.5.

As far as betting is concerned for over/under odds, this is a “pick ‘em bet.” It could go either way for Chestnut and Sudo. One might break their previous record, while the other won’t. Both could break their old records or they could both fall short. It really is up in the air for this element of the competition.

Betting Predictions for the 2021 Nathan’s Hot Dog Eating Contest

My personal prediction is that Joey Chestnut and Miki Sudo will successfully retain their respective mustard-yellow and pink belts at this year’s contest.

Having the advantage of winning the contest for multiple consecutive years, Chestnut and Sudo should reign victorious on Independence Day 2021.

It would be a huge feat to overcome the incumbent champions, but I suppose it’s not impossible. Who knows?

Maybe Matt Stonie could make a comeback this year against Chestnut and win by the skin of his teeth. Maybe Sonya Thomas could somehow ascend back to the heights of her three-year champion reign and score a victory over Sudo.

At the end of the day, it is highly unlikely; it’s simply wishful thinking. I personally see Chestnut and Sudo absolutely destroying the competition this year.

As far as betting on Chestnut and Sudo to improve or fall short of their previous records, I would use your best judgment and proceed with caution as the odds are 50/50; it is anyone’s guess as to whether they can improve on their records from the previous year.

However, I would strongly recommend with confidence to bet on our incumbent champions to place first in their respective divisions at this year’s Nathan’s Hot Dog Eating Contest.
